Synopsis: Afterwards is a spiritual, theatrical novella, a sequel to Enz’s play City Girls and Desperados. Enz’s elliptical, transcendent storytelling revolves around a crew of hipster artists orbiting the steadying center of legend to legends; Sam Shaw – creator of the famous (Marilyn subway shot) and esteemed, Cassavetes producer, whose lawsuit of biblical proportions with his only son evolves into a blueprint for forgiveness that gives this piece its resonant heart. Sam’s son is shattered by his refusal to say “Yes, I do, I do love you.” after an argument with the love of his life French film Goddess Françoise Dorléac, just before she drives away to her fiery death. This tragedy ripples through decades across oceans snuffing out the possibility of love for generations. Characters ballet with younger versions of themselves as they unravel multiple dimensions of time, identity, death, reality, and truth through a maze-like world, desperately in need of empathy.
These collaborators reunite as a plea for a softer, kinder world through building a play that is likewise linguistically nimble and beautiful. Rocco and Enz meet at a truly fortuitous time to remind audiences of the power of language, the need for empathy, and that the purest, most effective route to empathy is live theater. A balm for all the tenderhearted people whose hearts are too big for this world; Afterwards offers the sanctifying power of mythic love.

PAMELA ENZ (Playwright) Self described as a Hybrid Collagist, Enz has a practice of overlapping multiple mediums. Her solo show of a series of shorts 3D-HOWLING showcased at Squeaky Wheel in Buffalo, N.Y. included an interview with mentor Sam Shaw (Casavetes producer) who shepherded Pamela through the making of “oh, belly, belly…”, starring Christopher Lawford & Adam Hann-Byrd the lead character in Jodie Foster 1st film “Little Man Tate”. Short films include “sushi suicide” screened at ASHWAGH Hall in East Hampton and “Easier Said Than Done” which premiered at The Cork International Film Festival. Pamela’s screenplay “Didja..didja didja..find a gun?” was chosen for the NO BORDERS section of the IFFM. Most recently Theater for the New City produced “City Girls & Desperadoes” with Julie Atlas Muz and Austin Pendleton.

DANNY ROCCO (Director) is the author and director of the 55-actor play CONVENTION. He is the internationally produced playwright, director and pioneer of the Script Writing Score, whose writing has been developed and produced in New York, Los Angeles, Cape Cod, Colorado, Romania, at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the Irondale Theater Center. He is supported by Yaddo, the Edward F. Albee Foundation, Byrdcliffe, Catwalk, the Arctic Circle Residency and Atlantic Acting School. ÈVE LAROCHE-JOUBERT (Scenic Design) Ms. Enz’s long-term collaborator “Body Parts… a series of…” their 1st collaboration: “Creating is a vital necessity: preserving physical and psychological balance, opposing the absurdities of our societies with a poetic presence — to oneself, to others, to the world. A multidisciplinary artist who creates, engineers, sculpts, and performs her own work, Ève’s distinctive synthesis of sculpture, movement, and critical inquiry has brought her work to audiences worldwide. Her work has been exhibited in private and public institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art (MRAC Sérignan) in Occitanie, South of France, and the University for the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. RAY ARCHIE: (Sound Design, Audio Engineering) Ray Archie is the Executive Director of Notes to the Soul and head engineer of Brooklyn Sound Lab. As a musician, Ray plays cello, bass, & piano and has performed internationally with Leonard Bernstein, Michael Tilson-Thomas, LSO, SF Symphony orchestra, & many others. Ray crosses the boundaries of classical, jazz, rock, hip-hop, and soul music. Ray is also an award-winning engineer/producer who has worked in television and radio for over 15 years, has spoken internationally at both AES and EBU conventions, and has recorded 30+ albums, 25+ audiobooks, and 100’s long format journalism pieces for major publishers and media companies. MICHELE CORREGGIO: (Stage Management) Michele Correggio is a NJ based Stage Manager for theatre and dance. She is the Production Supervisor for The Scranton Shakespeare Festival where she has Stage Managed 17 shows across 9 seasons. Some of her Off Broadway Credits include: Two Brown Porters, The Berlin Diaries, and Antiquated F*ckery with The Pool Plays 3.0. With the Milton Theatre: Jersey Boys, Bare: A Pop Opera, and Joseph…Dreamcoat. With Luna Stage her credits include: Richard II, Torn Asunder, and Two Elizas. DAVID GUERIERA: (Arthur Afterwards) David Gueriera has been living in the Los Angeles area for the past 20 years acting in films, television, voice over, and theater. Born and raised in Virginia, he graduated from Theatre VCU and moved to Chicago, then New York before landing in LA. Thrilled to be a part of this production of Afterwards at La Mama, he recently worked with Danny Rocco on his play Unplugged Electric Guitar and in the past productions and upcoming official premiere of Convention, as Senator John H Bankhead. In his return to the theater in 2024, he performed in Into the Woods at Greenway Court Theatre.

RAQUEL ALMAZAN (Associate Producer) Interdisciplinary artist, facilitator and activist. (M.F.A. – Playwriting, Columbia University). Their work has been featured Off-Broadway, throughout the United States and internationally in Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Canada and Sweden; including several of her plays within the (Latin is America play cycle), bi-lingual plays in dedication to Latin American countries. AISLINN CURRY: (Associate Producer) Aislinn Curry works primarily as a Production Manager and Stage Manager on new and ambitious works across disciplines. She just returned from a second summer in Minnesota working at Lakes Area Music Festival and is looking forward to a year that includes continued work on Jesse Malin’s Silver Manhattan and Fela! The Concert. Other recent favorites are production managing Richard Foreman’s What to wear for PROTOTYPE/BMP at BAM, Soho Rep’s annual gala, and several productions at EST. APRIL SANDMEYER: (Associate Producer) April Sandmeyer’s multifaceted theatrical collaboration with playwright Pamela Enz and veteran actor-director Austin Pendleton is an active creative partnership spanning direction, production, and acting. Credits include: “Afterwards”: Served as Associate Producer for the staged reading of Pamela Enz’s play starring Austin Pendleton. “Chagall in New York”: Acted alongside Austin Pendleton in the production at Theater for the New City while also earning an Executive Producer credit. “Airtime “’ Enz’ Associate Producer in the downtown New York indie scene. Pendleton directed her in Gregory Nisan’s “Stowaway to Paradise”. Sandmeyer returns as an Associate Producer for the run of “Afterwards” at LaMama this Fall.
