Takeo Rivera

Takeo Rivera HeadshotDr. Takeo Rivera has been a friend of Poetic Theater Productions since writing Goliath: A Choreopoem, which PTP first staged in 2011. Originally trained as a slam poet, Takeo made the transition to playwriting under the tutelage of Cherríe Moraga and continues to write works on race, sexuality, violence, and power. His plays have been staged in New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Boston. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Takeo now lives in Boston, where he is assistant professor of English at Boston University, as well as core faculty of the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Program and affiliate faculty of African American Studies and Ibram X. Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research. His first academic book, Model Minority Masochism, is forthcoming from Oxford University Press within the year.

was presented in the Planet Connections Theatre Festival where it was nominated for 9 awards and won 5 including OUTSTANDING OVERALL PRODUCTION, GOLIATH was also presented in the Poetic License 2012 Festival, for its own run in spring of 2012, an encore presentation in the Culture Project’s IMPACT Festival, on tour to Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center, La Guardia Community College, University of California Berkeley, Stanford University, and University of California Santa Cruz. A welcome back performance was featured in the Poetic License 2014 Festival.
