From August 18-20, Poetic Theater Productions presented Conscious Language: three days of workshops, conversation and performance curated by muMs (HBO’s “Oz”) on how poets and theater makers can use their words to create a socially conscious theater of language.
MONDAY AUGUST 18TH @ 7PM
The opening evening featured performances of work by Craig muMs Grant and a conversation on “Conscious Language: The Landscape of Responsibility” with artists & activists Ursula Rucker, jessica Care moore and Caroline Rothstein, moderated by muMs.
TUESDAY AUGUST 19TH @ 7PM
Tuesday featured performances of work by Lauren Whitehead and Maurice Decaul and a conversation on “Conscious Language: Words that Drive Movements” with PTP artists Maurice Decaul, Lauren Whitehead, Craig muMs Grant and Darian Dauchan, moderated by Co-Artistic Director Alex Mallory, plus performances of new poems by Darian Dauchan, Kate Foster, Joanna Hoffman, Reginald Flood and Katherine George inspired by or in response to classic activist poems.
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 20TH @7PM
The final evening featured performances of six short plays written by poets Timothy DuWhite, Teniece Divya Johnson, Jacqueline Jones LaMon, Carvens Lissaint, Henry Mills and Jennifer Pacanowski, and a conversation on “Conscious Language In Practice” with Saul Williams, José Rivera and Dominique Morisseau, moderated by muMs and Lauren Whitehead.
Performances featured the talents of Nicole Aiken, Stefa Marín Alarcon, Ali Andre Ali, Jennifer Cendaña Armas, Xandra Clark, Samantha Cooper, Dontonio Demarco, Natalia Duong, Tamara Geisler, Joell Jackson, Ryan F. Johnson, Nabil Viñas, Temesgen Tocruray, and Malia Wright.
